18th-century French limestone fireplace surround, Ref. 1577, ca. 1775–1795
This Antique Fireplace surround is shown in the four photos above as a calm, late-18th-century limestone surround with a structured frieze and fluted legs. The elevation is symmetrical and clearly neoclassical: framed rectangular fields in the frieze, restrained mouldings, and vertical fluting that keeps the profile crisp and architectural. Hand-carved details are visible, and the lintel is a single piece. The surface shows patina and a weathered character, supporting projects where authentic material depth matters more than a newly finished appearance.

Description
The surround presents a disciplined entablature with framed fields across the frieze and a central accent, combined with deeply fluted legs that strengthen the vertical reading. The carving remains restrained and geometric, supporting alignment with wall returns and joinery lines. As a French Fireplace mantel, it suits interiors where the fireplace should read as an architectural element rather than a decorative focal point.
Materially, the limestone shows age through surface variation and patina, which helps the piece sit naturally in period properties as well as in carefully detailed contemporary renovations. It can also be specified as an Antique Chimneypiece where clarity of proportion and authentic surface character are priorities, while functioning as a Vintage mantel within a broader interior scheme.
