Antique French Fireplace in French limestone (Ref. 1578), circa 1760–1780

This antique French fireplace (Ref. 1578) is a hand-carved Louis XV Transition Antique Chimneypiece in French limestone, dated circa 1760–1780 and originating from a Maison de Maître in the old city centre of Troyes, France. The weathered surface shows natural patina and traces of use that read clearly in the photo set above, with a cartouche detail centred on the frieze/lintel.

Its proportions are balanced and architectural, with a generous opening that suits both residential and hospitality interiors where an authentic historic surround is required.

Description

The surround is carved in French limestone with Louis XV Transition character: restrained curvature and moulded lines combined with a more structured, architectural reading. The legs are proportioned at 13 cm (5.1 in) in width, supporting a lintel/frieze zone with a central cartouche. The shelf depth measures 24 cm (9.4 in), offering a clear Vintage Mantel line without appearing heavy.

With an opening of 141 × 107 cm (55.5 × 42.1 in), this Antique Fireplace Surround presents as a substantial historic frame intended for a principal room setting, where the stone’s aged surface and tooling remain visible and coherent.

Condition and surface

The limestone shows a weathered historic surface with patina and traces of use, consistent with an original antique fireplace. Wear is present and forms part of the character. No fractures are stated.

Dimensions and fit

Overall size is 170 × 134 × 71 cm (66.9 × 52.8 × 28.0 in). The firebox opening measures 141 × 107 cm (55.5 × 42.1 in). For project planning, the shelf depth (24 cm / 9.4 in) and jamb width (13 cm / 5.1 in) help confirm how the surround will read in elevation and how much visual mass sits to either side of the opening.
